First newsletter of 2024!
I am pleased to share some significant news —for the next 6 months I now have my very own studio space at the Kordin Business Incubation Centre (KBIC), thanks to a collaboration between ARTZ ID and Malta Enterprise. This marks a major step forward for me, transitioning from painting in bedrooms, hallways, and friends' studios to finally (!!!) having a dedicated place for my work.
New Studio Space
In March earlier this year, KBIC announced a collaboration with ARTZ ID aimed at integrating and empowering the local visual arts community through various initiatives and programs. One of the key incentives is the allocation of 50 sqm of studio space, coupled with a mentoring program for emerging artists. I am honoured to be the first artist selected to benefit from this initiative. You can read more about this here.
The housing and property crisis in Malta has made finding affordable studio space incredibly challenging for creatives and artists. It is encouraging to see organisations like ARTZ ID and Malta Enterprise step in to support artists. This collaboration not only provides us with a place to work but also recognises artists’ endeavours as valuable enterprises.
Having my own studio is immensely meaningful. It is a space where I can invite other artists, foster collaborations, and focus on my work without limitations.
Current Themes
With this new space, I am eager to explore certain imagery more deeply. I'll be sharing some insights from the books and materials I'm engaging with—more on that in future updates.
With the new studio space at KBIC, I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to create larger works. Expanding my canvases allows me to explore more dynamic compositions, and immersive experiences that smaller formats sometimes cannot accommodate. This scale of work demands a different approach, challenging me to think and paint more expansively. It's an exhilarating (and humbling) process that pushes the boundaries of my creativity and technical skills, enabling me to convey more profound and impactful artistic narratives. I'm excited to share these larger compositions pieces you as I continue to evolve and grow in this inspiring environment.
I am also looking forward to participating in the mentoring and promotional programs offered by ARTZ ID. In fact, I had my first meeting with my mentor Maria Galea just yesterday, and it was incredibly enlightening and motivating. We discussed a wide range of topics, from advanced painting techniques to strategic career planning.
Sometimes, I get a bit philosophical and existential about the notion of creating art in general, and this conversation was a great reminder of why humans feel the innate need to create, regardless of the medium they choose. This collaboration provides a unique chance to both contribute to and learn from a vibrant community of artists and educators. I'm excited about the journey ahead and the growth that will come from these enriching interactions.
Thank you for your ongoing support and for reading this update. I look forward to sharing more about my process, work, and experiences in this new space in the coming weeks.
